GNOME Menu Launcher

Sometimes it's nice to do small cosmetics to the GUI.
If you use a GUI it's because you value convenience, at least.

This time I'll just write down the easy setup of a GNOME Launcher as an item of the Main Menu, such as in the following example for NetBeans 8.1:

To set up that:
  • Go to System | Preferences | Main Menu.
  • Select Applications | Developer Tools.
  • Click on the + New Item button.
  • Fill in the blanks and choose an icon.
  • Finish by clicking the Close button (of course!)
For instance:

When finished you'll see the newly configured menu item representing the launcher as per your above settings. It's just that simple!

GNOME Nautilus terminals

This post is yet another example of GNOME Nautilus scripts.
Back in 2014 it seems I have forgotten to cover this handy feature.
The credits go to Oracle Solaris support team, not me.
I simply embellish the topic for the benefit of all.

Here's the recipe:

Change directories to your local GNOME configuration:

$ cd $HOME/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts

or maybe

$ cd ~/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts

Being there, create the following empty executable script:

$ touch open-in-terminal
$ chmod a+x open-in-terminal

At least under Solaris 11.3 which features Nautilus 2.30.1 under GNOME 2.30.2 is just that simple! The script can be empty and in fact any contents seems to be ignored. All that matters is the presence of the properly named script (executable) file called open-in-terminal.

Happy New Year! Again!

By the Gregorian calendar the year 2015 is over...
So, welcome 2016!

I wish you all a happy new year!
I still hope that the world become a better place for all!
In 2016 I still hope that you at least try making the difference!
Happiness consists on making the others happier.

By now we've been truth Solaris 11.2 and are now at version 11.3!
That's great! I was right about Solaris and other things as well...
But the story isn't over yet. Those that will live will see... :-)

And yes I still think that Solaris is the #1 back-end infrastructure OS of choice!
And I'd like that industry standards get stronger and simpler;
both for enterprises and for low-end consumers!

Thank you!
Take care.

Breaking free

By the end of August I've finally broke free from almost 8 years of a sad workday routine.
A severe harassement left me out of options while I combated corruption and evil.
It took me a lot of courage, dignity and faith to resign from a proficuous career.
But when everythting is poisoned and doomed by others there's no way out.

Of course I can't make public the name of this company.
What I may say is that it's big and well-known on its segment.
The amount of money and resources they've been wasting is fabulous.
But, as everybody knows, unfortunately, there are those who benefit from chaos.

Of course that's why I moved to Solaris years ago and have stuck to it.
Solaris leaves few or no margin for the bad guys to cheat.
That's why the cheaters have come after me.
As a person of faith I pray for them.

I can say I've pursuited the best for the company and for people.
I can say I've respected Nature by taking into consideration natural resources.
I can say I posed no harm to anyone but acted Etically, with honesty and by the Law.
I've struggled to give a good example and God shall be my ultimate Judge and Witness.

I have peace of mind.
I continue to sleep very well.
My health is improving each day.
Now I live much better; and with much less.
I'm resuming advanced courses I left suspended years ago.
It may take a while for things to settle down, but chances are now I'll live longer.
After this critical transition I shall be happly resuming my posts.

Thank you.
Take care of yourself.
